Braffit Creek Petroglyphs - photo by Nathan Cowlishaw

Rock Art in Southern Utah

This Panel here is found less than a fourth of mile behind my grandpa's ranch. Few people know of these panels. I will not give the location anyhow. I have been to other places in the same area and I have walked across many surprising things.. I do not tell people of them.

The place where this petroglyph panel is found is covered with Juniper and Pinion trees. You can gather Pine Nuts and eat them in the fall when they come off the Pinion Tree.

My cousins, brother and I come up with my occasionally to enjoy the wilderness. It is very beautiful country.

Petroglyphs near Ivins, Utah

Mountain Goats - photo by Nathan Cowlishaw

The Ivins Petroglyphs are well known to the people of St. George. Luckily, like the Parowan Gap, they are under decent protection of the federal government. Only a small percentage of Rock Art areas in Utah receive minimal protection. The rest are are significant targets for vandals who have no respect for beauty, and the things of the past. I consider these historical places as sacred.  All too often have I come across a panel out in the middle of nowhere to find that it has been grossly defaced and desecrated. It is a sad thing that is happens regularly, and no one seems to care. There are still areas that are not known by vandals nor by the general public, and they are protected by secrecy and the respect of individuals that know of the whereabouts. In most cases, this can be the best protection for a petroglyph site.

The Mountain Sheep symbols above on this panel, are pretty large. The biggest ram is about two feet wide. My brother and I came here to these petroglyphs before dark and and photographed them.

These petroglyph site is near a cliff edge. In the valley below flows a small stream, and there seems to be eroding ruins below. The artisans/writers of the rock art must have come up here on this mesa edge to create the beautiful panels of delicate rock art. I have no idea what the panel above might translate into, but there is something very mysterious about it!

Little Man - photo by Nathan Cowlishaw

This picture is of a little man. This panel could be telling you about a flood that once happened in this area and how the people were affected by it. It could also be something more mysterious? The Paiutes have a legend of small man that roams around the country. I could be wrong about this, but I think he is supposed to be the individual that inscribed the rock art that is found in many inaccessible places.

When my brother and I came here not to long ago, there was no other humans. All was quiet, except for the sweet things of nature.
